Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of disorders that damage the optic nerve, gradually stealing sight without warning.  In the early stages of the disease, there may be no symptoms.  However, a comprehensive eye exam can detect glaucoma.  Medical experts estimate that half of the people affected by glaucoma may not even know they have the disease.  There is no cure for glaucoma, however, early detection and treatment with medication or surgery can slow or prevent futher vision loss and progression.

People at risk should have eye exams at least once a year.  Those at risk include:

  • African Americans over age 40
  • People over age 60, especially Mexican Americans
  • People with a family history of glaucoma

EyeCare Associates is one of the few medical clinics in Oklahoma that utlize the SLT which is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty.  The SLT is a laser that helps in the drainage part of the eye.  It uses light to help the body clean up the pigment cells and debris, lowering the pressure on the eye.  The SLT is becoming the new way to treat glaucoma.  It provides a viable option to medications, which can have side effects.
