LASIK FAQ's

What is Bladeless LASIK?
In the LASIK and Custom LASIK procedures, Dr. Dan Langley creates a flap of corneal tissue and then folds it back. The cornea is the transparent dome-like structure that covers the iris and pupil of your eye. By creating a flap in the cornea, Dr. Langley performs the laser vision correction treatment on the inner layer to allow rapid visual recovery.

The staff of EyeCare Associates wants you to be confident in your decision to have a LASIK procedure. Dr. Williams and Dr. Langley work as a team to prepare a comprehensive consultation to determine the best treatment for you. We have provided a list of frequently asked questions in order to provide you more information. We encourage you to call for a free LASIK screening.

Who is a candidate for LASIK?
LASIK is for patients who would like to see clearly without the aid of glasses or contact lenses.

Is LASIK for me?
If you wear glasses or contact lenses for the correction of hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), or astigmatism (distorted vision), you may be a candidate for the LASIK procedure. A FREE LASIK screening can determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Will I ever need glasses again?
Some patients may still require thinner glasses for fine tuning, however a many patients never have to wear glasses or contacts again. Some patients with higher corrections may need an enhancement or "tuning" after the initial LASIK procedure.

Is there any pain?
LASIK is a painless procedure. Dr. Langley uses topical anesthesia drops to numb your eyes and provides oral medications to assist with relaxation. Some patients have reported a pressure sensation during the early part of the procedure. Some patients experience slight scratchiness for the first few hours following the procedure. However, this is easily relieved by inserting eye drops.

How long does the procedure take?
The actual LASIK procedure only takes about 3 minutes per eye. However, you should expect to be in our office for about 90 minutes.

How will I keep my eye open during the LASIK procedure?
We hold your lids open with a small lid holder.

How old do I have to be for LASIK?
Age 18 is the youngest age we recommend. There is no upper age limitation.

How can I hold my eye still for the LASIK procedure?
There is a red blinking light inside the laser that you focus on during the procedure. In addition, the VISX Star S4 Excimer Laser incorporates an excellent eye tracker that enables the laser to follow your eye movements should any occur.

What if I wear contact lenses?
It is not necessary to be out of contacts for any period prior to your FREE LASIK screening. However, once you have moved forward with LASIK, we ask that you stop wearing contacts for a period of time leading up to the procedure. The reason is wearing contacts can cause "molding" or re-shaping of your cornea. Staying out of your contacts allows your cornea to "un-mold" or return to its natural shape to allow us to get an accurate pre-LASIK measurement. Remove soft daily wear contacts for one week, extended wear contacts for two weeks, and rigid gas permeable contacts for 4 weeks prior to your complete LASIK exam.

Who is not a LASIK candidate?
Patients with Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, keratoconus, herpes simplex of the cornea (herpes elsewhere is not a problem), AIDS, autoimmune diseases, or anyone with unrealistic expectations, is not an appropriate LASIK candidate.

How much time do I need to take off of work?
You'll need at least one day to recover after the procedure. Most patients are able to return to work on the following day.

What restriction will there be following the LASIK procedure?
You should avoid wearing eye makeup and dusty, dirty environments for two days following your procedure. You should also avoid rubbing your eyes and swimming for two weeks. Most patients are able to drive the day after the procedure.

Will I see everything the doctor is doing during the procedure?
No, when the "flap" is created, your vision will go dark and during later steps of the procedure, patients report it is as though they are looking through a foggy window watching the doctor working.

Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL)
Some patients who are not a candidate for LASIK may be a candidate for Implantable contact lenses. It is an appropriate procedure for most patients who have severe levels of short sight, long sight and/or astigmatism. Similar to small "contact lens" Dr. Dan Langley places the ICL's inside the eye instead of sitting on the surface. If your prescription falls outside the treatment range for LASIK, then Implantable Contact Lenses may be an option. Dr. Dan Langley is one of only three Ophthalmologists in the state certified to perform the ICL surgery.
